The Vila de Porto de Galinhas is the center of the destination, in the district of Porto de Galinhas, in Ipojuca (PE), about 50 km from Recife International Airport. The jangadas, traditional sail rafts, leave from the central beach for the natural pools, and restaurants, shops, the craft market and the nightlife are within a few streets you can cover on foot.
Where it is
Porto de Galinhas has about 18 km of coastline. From north to south: Muro Alto, Cupe, the Vila, Maracaípe, Pontal de Maracaípe and Serrambi. Muro Alto is about 10 km north of the Vila, and Maracaípe Beach is about 3 km south. Recife is about 60 km away.
Getting there from Recife airport
- Car, taxi or ride-hailing app: the shortest route is via the BR-101 and the PE-009, the Rota do Atlântico, in about 45 to 50 minutes. The toll for passenger cars has been R$ 11.60 since January 2026. There is a toll-free alternative via the PE-060 and the PE-038, passing through Nossa Senhora do Ó.
- Reference prices: a ride-hailing trip cost about R$ 90 in 2025 and R$ 120 to R$ 150 in early 2026; a taxi, about R$ 220 in 2025. Private transfers start at about R$ 350 round trip (2026).
- Bus: according to the official Grande Recife fare table checked in October 2026, line 191, without air conditioning, costs R$ 14.80, and line 195, with air conditioning, R$ 22.50. Line 195 goes via the airport and ends on Rua da Esperança, in the Vila. The trip takes about 2 hours, and there is no bus station in the Vila.
If you are staying in the Vila, a car is not essential: the beach, restaurants and shops are within walking distance. To visit Muro Alto, Cupe, Maracaípe and Serrambi, a car, a ride-hailing app or a buggy helps.
Natural pools and jangadas
The Porto de Galinhas natural pools form at low tide among the reefs in front of the central beach, almost 200 meters from the sand. The jangadas of the Associação dos Jangadeiros leave from in front of the Praça das Piscinas Naturais: in October 2026, the tour cost R$ 60 per person aged 7 and over, in cash or by Pix, Brazil's instant payment, and lasted about 1 hour. With the tide below about 0.4 m, you can walk there, in groups and for a limited time. The tides around the full moon and the new moon are usually the best. Check the tide table.
The sea in the Vila
The central beach has clear water and few waves, because it is protected by the reefs, but the strip of sand is narrow and almost disappears at high tide. The northern stretch has waves and is used by surf schools. The Salvamar de Ipojuca lifeguards work from 5:30 to 17:00, and red and yellow flags mark the areas with currents, which shift as the sea changes.
The town center
The pedestrian center of the Vila takes in Rua Beijupirá, Rua das Piscinas Naturais, known as Rua das Sombrinhas, and Rua da Esperança. In the Praça das Esculturas are the sign with the beach's name and the wooden chickens by Gilberto Carcará, an artist born in Piauí who carves the trunks of dead coconut palms and settled in Porto de Galinhas in 1997. The Porto de Galinhas craft market is open on Rua Beijupirá, from 14:00 to 22:00.
At night the activity concentrates on these streets, with bars, restaurants and free live music on a stage on Rua Beijupirá. There is no strong club scene. Shops usually close at 22:00, and restaurants at 23:00. The Porto de Galinhas Lighthouse, a private 14-meter lookout, is inside Munganga Bistrô; in November 2025, restaurant customers went up without paying.
Why it is called Porto de Galinhas
According to local tradition, after the slave trade was banned in the 19th century, enslaved people arrived hidden under crates of guinea fowl, and the password was "tem galinha nova no porto" ("there are new chickens at the port"). Before that, the place was called Porto Rico, because of the abundance of brazilwood.
Where to stay
Staying in the Vila lets you do everything on foot and enjoy the nightlife, with some noise at certain places to stay. Muro Alto and Cupe are quieter and have most of the resorts, but you need transportation. On holidays, bookings are usually made months in advance: over the 2025 to 2026 New Year's holiday, hotel occupancy reached 96%, and the destination received more than 1.2 million visitors in 2025.
