Ateliê Gilberto Carcará
Ateliê Gilberto Carcará is the workspace of the artist who carves, from coconut palm trunks and roots, the colorful chickens associated with Porto de Galinhas. It is in Merepe, reached from the PE-009, and suits anyone interested in local art and crafts.
The pieces are made from fallen coconut palm trunks and roots, material the artist reuses. A commissioned piece can take four to five days, depending on its size and complexity. At the studio, you will often find Carcará himself at work and chatting with visitors.
His work can also be seen in the Vila (the village center of Porto de Galinhas). In 2014, Praça das Esculturas, which leads to the natural pools, received a permanent display of 12 pieces. The open-air exhibition A galinha nova no Porto ("The new chicken at the Port") brought together seven themed chickens, such as the Surfista (Surfer), the Marisqueira (Shellfish Gatherer) and the Pernambucana (Woman from Pernambuco).
The address is Rua Carcará, 8, reached from km 7 of the PE-009. Published opening hours vary between sources, so confirm before you go.
