If you are staying in Porto de Galinhas, Olinda is a day trip through colonial heritage. The Historic Site, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1982, brings together churches, convents, museums and the Alto da Sé, with a view of the sea. The city is about 7 km from central Recife, so it is usually combined with the capital on the same day.
How to get there
By car, it is about 67 to 69 km, between 1 hour and 1 hour 10 minutes without traffic. There is street parking and there are private parking lots near the sights. By bus, lines 195 and 191 connect Porto de Galinhas to Recife; from there, you need another ride to Olinda, and ride-hailing cars work without difficulty. Agencies in Porto de Galinhas sell Recife and Olinda city tours with a guide and hotel pickup, Monday to Saturday, with prices from R$ 142 per adult in 2026, entrance tickets not included.
How much time to set aside
A morning or an afternoon covers the essentials, and about 4 hours covers the main sights on foot. Churches and museums close early: the Catedral da Sé usually closes at 17:00, the Convento de São Francisco closes at lunchtime and may close on Sundays, and the museums in the Historic Site open only in the afternoon on weekends.
What to combine
In Varadouro are the Mosteiro de São Bento and the Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Pernambuco, which reopened in 2026. Around the Alto da Sé are the Catedral da Sé, the Convento de São Francisco, the Casa dos Bonecos Gigantes e Mirins and the small tapioca (cassava-starch crepe) market, busiest around 15:00. The view from the Sé in the late afternoon rounds off the itinerary before the trip back. On Sundays, the 10:00 Mass at the Mosteiro de São Bento has Gregorian chant.
Safety and guides
The Historic Site has 24-hour camera monitoring, but thefts have been reported: watch your phone and bag, especially in crowds. Accredited tour guides are registered with Cadastur, and the local guides (condutores nativos) wear the local association's T-shirt. During Carnival 2027, from February 6 to 9, you need to be extra careful; the prévias (pre-Carnival events) began in September 2026.
