Igreja do Carmo de Olinda
Igreja do Carmo is on Praça do Carmo, in the Historic Site of Olinda. Built in 1580 as the Chapel of Santo Antônio and São Gonçalo, it is regarded as the first church of the Carmelite Order in Latin America. It suits those touring the historic churches and those who want to photograph the town.

Getting there from Porto de Galinhas
By car, it is about 67 to 69 km from Porto de Galinhas, via Recife, between 1 hour and 1 hour 10 minutes without traffic. The church is on Praça do Carmo, an address with no number. The most popular angle for photographing the façade is from Alto da Sé, where the church can also be seen through the upper-floor windows and from the courtyard of the Sé Cathedral.
Hours and admission
The church usually opens at Mass times, and no fixed visiting hours have been confirmed for 2026. Updated times are posted on the sanctuary's Instagram profile. No admission price has been confirmed.
What to see
The interior has simple architecture, with two altars of carved and gilded wood, rich in detail. Construction began in 1580, as a chapel dedicated to Santo Antônio and São Gonçalo. The church was damaged during the Dutch invasion and later rebuilt.
Before you go
Since opening follows the Mass schedule, check the sanctuary's schedule on the day of your visit before adding the church to your itinerary. If the door is closed, the façade can be seen and photographed from the square and from Alto da Sé. The same walk through the Historic Site can take in the Mosteiro de São Bento, the Sé Cathedral and the Convento de São Francisco.
