Tamandaré is the municipality on the southern coast of Pernambuco that is home to Carneiros Beach, Tamandaré's central beach and the Forte de Santo Inácio de Loyola. From Porto de Galinhas, it is a day trip, about 50 km to Carneiros and 56 km to the town center.
Getting there
By car, the trip takes less than 1 hour to Carneiros and about 55 minutes to the center of Tamandaré. If you prefer not to drive, there is a daily tour from Porto de Galinhas: in October 2026, the price was R$ 160 per adult until December 18, 2026, with a guide and a day pass at a beach club in Carneiros. The catamaran and meals are paid separately. There is no confirmed direct bus from Porto.
How much time to allow
Tours to Carneiros take the whole day, with an early departure, sometimes before hotel breakfast. If you go by car, you can split the day between Carneiros and the center of Tamandaré, which are in the same municipality.
What to combine
In Carneiros, catamaran tours run by local operators stop at the clay bath and the Capela de São Benedito. In the center, the beach has a seafront promenade and beach kiosks, and at low tide the reefs form natural pools. The reefs are part of the APA Costa dos Corais, managed by ICMBio, and Tamandaré has a closed area, created in 1999, where tourism and fishing are prohibited. The Forte de Santo Inácio de Loyola, built between 1668 and 1814 and reopened in 2017 after a renovation, is in the Tamandaré neighborhood; since the city government does not publish visiting hours, call ahead.
Before you go
Check the tide table: the pools depend on low tide. At the Val pools, the city government warned in 2025 about the presence of lionfish, which have venomous spines and should not be touched.
