Getting there from Porto de Galinhas
Porto de Galinhas is about 50 km from Recife. The Institute is on Alameda Antônio Brennand, in Várzea, the same neighborhood as the Oficina Francisco Brennand. You can go by car, by ride-hailing app or with a booked transfer.
Hours and admission
Open Tuesday to Sunday, 13:00 to 17:00, with last entry at 16:30; closed on Mondays. Prices as of January 2026: museums R$ 60 (half price R$ 30); garden and chapel R$ 30 (half price R$ 15); museums and chapel R$ 80 (half price R$ 40). Since March 2026, entry is free on the first Friday of each month, from 10:00 to 17:00. For the September 2026 edition, 2,500 free tickets were handed out at the ticket office on a first-come, first-served basis, with no online booking and one ticket per person.
What to see
The complex has a temporary exhibition gallery; a picture gallery with paintings and sculptures by Brazilian and foreign artists, including works by the Dutch painter Frans Post and a sculpture by Fernando Botero; and a castle with a medieval collection, which houses the collection of edged weapons and the Sala dos Cavaleiros (Knights' Hall), with suits of armor. The Gothic chapel, opened in 2014, has an 18th-century Spanish Baroque altar, and the ride there is in an open-sided shuttle decorated as a vintage car. The gardens have sculptures. Allow at least two hours for the museums and another 30 minutes for the chapel.
Before you go
Inside the Institute there is the Doce Engenho café; the Castelus restaurant has an outside entrance and does not require a ticket. Since the Institute only opens in the afternoon, you can visit the Oficina Francisco Brennand in the morning and head to the Institute after lunch, always Tuesday to Sunday.
